ICANN is postponed to 2021. LNCS volume published in 2020.
The current situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape of how we work and meet, and brought a lot of uncertainty to everyone’s plans for 2020.
Based on the current restrictions to travel and gatherings, as well as forecasts for the coming months, it is difficult to imagine a large event such as ICANN take place in September 2020. Therefore, after a lot of consideration and discussions, the ICANN 2020 Organizing Committee, together with the Executive Committee of the European Neural Network Society have decided to postpone the physical meeting of ICANN 2020 and schedule next year’s ICANN in September 2021 in Bratislava, Slovakia, since we also believe that a physical meeting has so many advantages compared to a virtual one.
This has been a very difficult decision that was reached after carefully weighing out all our possibilities, and in the interest of health of all involved. Furthermore this gives the benefit of feedback and possible publication this year with a real event and physical conference in Bratislava. We aimed at not disappointing the paper-submitting neural networks community and not disappointing the current ICANN committee given their preparations for a physical event.
Nevertheless we want to do justice to the submitted papers and pursue the review process for possible publication as planned with the Springer publisher. We understand that research in a dynamic field such as the scope of ICANN cannot be put on hold for a year, and that many of the authors of manuscripts submitted to ICANN 2020 are relying on their work to be reviewed and published this year. Therefore, we are going to proceed with the review process for all submitted full papers. The review process will be adapted to the circumstances, in order to choose the very best papers to be published as a volume in Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science in 2020.
We hope for your understanding of this decision, and we are looking forward to welcoming you in person at ICANN 2021 in Bratislava.
Questions and answers
Q: Why don’t you organize an online conference in 2020?
A: An online conference doesn’t have the many benefits of a physical event, such as networking and informal discussions. Therefore we preferred to focus our efforts in organizing an excellent physical event when the circumstances will allow it, in 2021.
Q: What about extended abstracts submitted to ICANN 2020?
A: As extended abstracts are not a full publication and rely on a poster or oral presentation, they will not be considered for publication in the 2020 volume. If you have submitted an extended abstract, you are welcome to re-submit an updated version in 2021.
Q: What about registration?
A: Registration fees for 2020 will be adjusted to reflect the reduced costs for the organizers. More information on this will follow.
Q: Is it possible to withdraw one’s contribution?
A: Yes. Please contact the PC via the OCS submission system before 8.5.2020. However we hope that you appreciate that the PC of this year will review all submissions for publication in 2020.
Q: How will the accepted papers 2020 be published?
A: The accepted papers 2020 will be published as planned in a volume by the publisher Springer.
